The project team designed nine preliminary alternatives to meet specific project goals. Each alternative went through a screening process to determine if they met the project’s goals. Four alternative project designs met the majority of the Tier One (first round) goals and moved forward for further analysis. You can review the Tier One Project Goals/Screening Metrics here.
Alternative B meets the following Tier One project goals:
Removes the alternate merge by redirecting Sam Rittenberg Blvd. traffic along Old Towne Rd. via Sumar St.
Provides a signalized crossing for bikes and pedestrians at the Orange Grove Rd. and Sam Rittenberg Blvd. intersection and at the new traffic signals at the Sumar St. and Old Towne Rd. and Sumar St. and Sam Rittenberg Blvd. intersections
Provides the opportunity to extend Sumar St. in the future
Improves the level of service for vehicles at Orange Grove Rd. and Sam Rittenberg Blvd. intersection
Alternative B does NOT meet the following Tier One project goals:
Does not maintain full access at Southgate Dr. (right-in, right-out operation only)
Does not maintain full access at North Bridge Dr. (left-turn out is prohibited)
Does not maintain existing access to businesses along SC 7 for northbound traffic (towards I-26)
Does not provide equal or better level of service for vehicles at the intersections along Sam Rittenberg Blvd.
Does not provide equal or better level of service for vehicles at the intersections along Old Towne Rd.
Directional Traffic Flow Patterns
Sam Rittenberg Blvd. to I-26: One lane turns right on Sumar St. (new traffic signal), then two lanes make a left on Old Towne Rd. (new traffic signal) to continue Northbound
I-26 to Sam Rittenberg Blvd.: Two lanes continue straight Southbound
Old Towne Rd. to I-26: Two lanes continue straight Northbound
I-26 to Old Towne Rd: Two lanes turn left onto Sumar St. (new traffic signal), and then turn right (dual rights) or left onto Old Towne Rd. (new traffic signal)
